The Crew of Patches are made up of performers and entertainers from many different walks of life. Below is a very basic CV (take it with a grain of salt,) of some of the performers:
Bob trained at Keele University has a post graduate teaching qualification, and writes four or five new shows a year. Taking his role models as Norman Wisdom and Arthur Lowe, Bob is (perhaps surprisingly,) an excellent comic actor, although no one could call him typecast, having performed in plays by authors as diverse as Shakespeare, Peter Barnes, David Mamet and himself. One of the founder members of the Crew he has worked in television, radio, and film as well as theatre, and is a highly valued member of the team, never short of a positive outlook or a creative idea. In his spare time Bob enjoys astronomy, and sitting in tunnels.
Jo is an incurable slattern with a penchant for showing off, so decided at an early age to tread the boards. She trained at Dartington College of Arts and RADA, and has been looking for work ever since. Adept in many fields of theater, her special interest is Shakespearean Technique, although she also has a certain fondness for Ken Campbell. Her hobbies include sumo wrestling and rare frog breeding, and it is her life long ambition to work as Alan Rickmans' dresser, (although purely for carnal reasons.)
There are many strings to Roys bow - actor, writer, comedian, and accountant to name but a few. Roy sites his writing influences as a "a cross between Spike Milligan and Noel Coward," which make his scripts somewhat diverse to say the least. Roy has a wealth of theatrical experience, beginning when he played Puck at the age of 12, and he has performed in comedy, tragedy, pantomime, television, radio, improvisation shows, musicals and has undertaken major roles from Shakespeare to Coward, from Wilde to Cooney. He sites his most challenging role as that of single handedly portraying the White Cliffs of Dover.
Think of a cross between Jennifer Saunders and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and you have Cathy in a nutshell. Before working for the Crew, she wandered into the London Dungeon one day, and liked the atmosphere so much, decided to stay for a year. While there she made the role of Tom the poisonous leper urchin all her own. One of Cathys favorite roles has been that of Stephano the drunken butler in "The Tempest" and one of her least favorite roles has been "Mad woman, sitting in a womb, clutching a decaying turkey carcass" in an untitled piece while training at Dartington College of Arts. This season Cathy will be portraying the role of a dwarf in the forthcoming "King Arthur" event, a role which she sees as a challenge, being 5 foot 7 tall. However, as she puts it herself "I have several heights in my repertoire."
Emma has a somewhat quirky sense of humour, which sometimes leads her into odd situations. The time when she walked the floors of Dover Castles Keep nursing a whistling ostrich in her hat is well remembered. Roles undertaken for the Crew include Sir Dithering Foresque, one of our Tudor Costume Characters, and The Grey Lady, the ghost of a woman trampled to death by horses. On the more glamorous side, she also made an extremely impressive Titania in A Midsummer Nights Dream, and a excellent Anne Page in The Merry Wives of Windsor. Emma trained at University College, and is of the opinion that the world would change is more people were a little nicer to platypus.
Extremely professional, highly experienced and respected by his peers, Bernard has been known to mutter "What am I doing working for this lot?" Bernard has performed all over the country, including seasons with Kent Rep and at The Minack Theatre. Experienced in many areas of theatre from Greek, through Shakespeare to modern playwrights, Bernard has also appeared in and directed pantomimes, worked in television and radio and is particularly at home when performing in musicals. Bernard is something of a method actor, who always begins his search for a character when building a role on what type of facial hair his character should have. This trait has endeared him to his fellow crew members - no other actor can demonstrate such variety with face furniture.
Stuart likes to live life on the edge. From an early age he has been blowing things up (often himself), using his talents to play the goriest of practical jokes (usually on his family), and generally endangering himself and others. These early interests led to experimenting in the field of special effects, and these days Stuart is never happier than when pouring algenate over a third parties body parts. He is currently studying with the highly esteemed Dick Smith in order to further his already impressive skills. Stuart has many hobbies, including photography, Roman re enactment and archery, and has performed in such as productions as the film Gladiator and in Simon Schamas History of Britain. He also works for the Crew as an actor/performer, most memorably portraying the title role in Queen Anne of Cleeves, complete with beard and moustache.
Matthew is the good looking one (when he is not dresses in a variety of astonishingly bad hats (see right.) He has performed in many and varied roles for the Crew ranging from Demetrius in A Midsummer Nights Dream to Widow Twanky. Matthew has also worked in television and film, most recently as a stand in. When asked what a stand in does he revealed Stands in the rain, stands in the sea, you know. He is a somewhat laid back character, whose improvisation skills are excellent. Matthew has performed all over the country and is also a gifted musician, having studied Drama and Music at The University of Kent.
A bundle of energy surrounded by cigarette smoke, is how many of the Crew fondly think of Paul. A very talented and gifted comic actor, he an get a laugh out of a stone idol, or an audience of metal detector enthusiasts, which is sometimes harder. Whilst working as a tour guide on a London double Decker bus, his improvisation skills were called upon on a daily basis is order to keep tourists interest while stuck in traffic. This has given rise to rumours about the great Hummingbird of London, who, heroically put out the Great Fire of London by beating its wings, and earned the honor of sleeping in the Queen's hat. Paul has performed stand up and sketches in London and at the Edinburgh Festival and has worked with The Natural Theatre Company, during which time he enjoyed such varied roles as bushes, kangaroo type animals, protesters against jollity and conehead type aliens.
Nicknamed "Whose Keeping the Show Together? Dave, this accomplished pianist and human Kareoke machine has jumped in and saved the show with a timely musical interlude on various memorable occasions. Blessed with a sense of humour so dry he would hardly get damp in the middle of a monsoon, Dave is always a joy to work with. His singular interest in penguins, The Simpsons, and the celebration of Barbie Pink Month make him nothing if not individualistic. Dave also has an excellent singing voice, and his performance of London Pride in our Noel Coward show rung a tear from the eye of even the hardest cynic. |
